General purpose medium paired with selective and differential medium on this two-sided dipslide.
Nutrient-TTC Agar is a general purpose (relatively non-selective) medium, which will support the growth of a wide variety of organisms. Suitable for cultivation of both aerobes and anaerobes. Aerobic coliform bacteria can be detected by their ability to reduce the TTC dye to a red-colored formozan dye. Bacterial colonies appear as red dots on an otherwise yellow medium.
MacConkey Agar is both selective and differential. It is used to differentiate between Gram negative bacteria while inhibiting the growth of most Gram positive bacteria. The medium also differentiates between lactose-fermenting coliforms (Lac (+)) and lactose non-fermenters (Lac (-)), which include potential pathogens.
The BioPaddlesLite App is a free app that helps you presumptively identify bacteria and mold colonies growing on your dipslide. By selecting the agar you used and the microhabitat you tested, the app will narrow down results from over 80 standard images. Compare your dipslide growth to the images for a presumptive identification, or use the grid for counting colonies. A more robust version is available for $5.99. The full BioPaddles app includes a library of over 250 standard images, as well as a camera function and reporting feature.
